The villains are all prone to malapropisms. She battles against an assortment of villains that include but are not limited to The Butcher, Chuck the Evil Sandwich Making Guy, Dr. WordGirl tries to balance her superhero activities with her "normal" life. Becky attends Woodview Elementary School, where she is close friends with Violet Heaslip and the school newspaper reporter Todd “Scoops” Ming. The Botsford family keeps Captain Huggy Face as a pet, naming him Bob. While in her alter ego, she has a younger brother, TJ, obsessed with WordGirl, but still unknowingly a typical sibling rival to Becky. WordGirl was adopted and provided an alter ego by Tim and Sally Botsford, who gave her the name Becky. WordGirl utilizes these powers to save her adoptive home, using her downed spacecraft as a secret base of operations. Captain Huggy Face, a chimpanzee who was a pilot in the Lexicon Air Force, piloted the ship, but lost control when WordGirl awoke, and crash-landed on Earth (more specifically in Fair City), a planet that affords WordGirl her superpowers, including flight and super strength. WordGirl was born on the fictional planet Lexicon (also a term referring to the vocabulary of a language or to a dictionary) but was sent away after sneaking onto a spaceship and sleeping there. The series follows WordGirl, a girl with superpowers whose secret identity is Becky Botsford, a student. Narrator Chris Parnell had previously worked on Saturday Night Live. Rather than hiring writers experienced with children's television, the show's original writers' previous credits included The Onion and Family Guy. Ferraiolo, who developed the series with Gillim and served as the series' head writer in Season One, received an Emmy for his work on WordGirl. PBS NewsHour anchor Jim Lehrer agreed to do a mock interview with WordGirl. The reasoning is that children can understand words like “cumbersome” when told that it means “big and heavy and awkward.” The words (examples include “diversion,” “cumbersome,” and “idolize”) are chosen according to academic guidelines. Įach eleven-minute segment in each episode (except for the first three episodes) begins with verbal instructions to listen for two words that will be used throughout the plot of that episode. Gillim says she created the show, in part, with the idea that parents would watch the show with their children to support their learning. If all those elements are working, then you can hook a child who may come looking for laughs but leave a little smarter. WordGirl's focus is on great stories, characters, and animation. I feel as though we’ve lost some ground there, in an effort to make it more accessible. Part of my mission is to make kids' television smart and funny. The show's creator, Dorothea Gillim, believes that children's shows often underestimate children's intelligence: WordGirl began in 2006 as a series of shorts airing immediately after Maya & Miguel, becoming an independent show in September 2007. By 2022, the show had gained a cult following through social media. The show was created for children ages 4–9. The series ended with the two-part episode "Rhyme and Reason", which was released on August 7, 2015. However, new episodes continued to air on select stations, with streaming options on the PBS Kids website and video app. īy June 2014, many PBS stations had stopped airing WordGirl, opting to air more popular series throughout the summer. WordGirl creator Dorothea Gillim felt that most children's animation "underestimated sense of humor" and hoped to create a more intellectual show for young audiences. The series of shorts consisted of thirty episodes, with 130 episodes in the full half-hour series. The series began as a series of shorts entitled The Amazing Colossal Adventures of WordGirl that premiered on PBS Kids Go! on November 10, 2006, usually shown at the end of Maya & Miguel the segment was then spun off into a new thirty-minute episodic series that premiered on Septemon most PBS member stations. WordGirl (stylized as W✪RD GIRL) is an American children's Flash animated superhero television series produced by the Soup2Nuts animation unit of Scholastic Entertainment for PBS Kids.

Personally, part of why I dig Staks and the Scale Robo cars is that they look like very functional robots, almost like weird future construction vehicles. You can look at is a more functional real robot style cockpit in place of a head, which is fun on one level, or you could look at as a cute big-eyed robot. There's a couple of ways to interpret this head. While the figure has the same strange faceless "windshields for eyes" head design as the Scale Robo DX cars, it's different when the head is a chunk of a semi-truck. Whether or not you are willing the shell out for the European release is basically a matter of how much you care about longer smokestacks and a unique box. While I'm sure it's much cheaper to just get the American Staks solo, I really think the Staks Transport giftset is worth the extra money because it adds so much to the truck mode's appearance. As far as the colors go, Staks works a lot better with the trailer than without. The blue trailer actually goes well with the orange, providing a calming counterbalance. If you hate orange and are just an adult collector looking for a display piece, you may find the Japanese Big Trailer Robo's reddish hue the better choice, but be prepared to pay a premium. Orange was always my favorite color and as a child that was part of this toy's appeal. Staks is a bright orange semi truck which is kind of garish but I have honestly seen trucks out on the road in these colors so it's not necessarily unrealistic. You can see here my second Staks, the one that actually survived my childhood. The cab part was identical and had black plastic both times. I had both at once and regular Staks became my sister's toy. Don't believe it if someone tries to tell you the regular Staks always had blue and the Transport always had black or vice versa because when I was a kid I got Staks first and then broke it only to have it replaced by Staks Transport. The Japanese release of Big Trailer Robo was a darker reddish color with blue and white stickers while the American Staks release is orange with yellow stickers and came with either black feet and back coloring or blue foot and back coloring. Big Trailer Robo has the strange faceless head made up of the upper part of the truck cab and is largely plastic except that, oh yeah, his legs are gigantic slabs of unpainted metal. The other Big Machine Robo toys are largely plastic and the Scale Robo DX toys are largely diecast metal with bizarre faceless heads that are mostly just chunks of car. Big Trailer Robo also cost more than the rest of the Big Machine Robo toys due no doubt to the trailer it sports. Big Trailer Robo is not really based on this toy at all. The 600 series Trailer Robo (Road Ranger) is a flat nosed truck like Optimus Prime, if Optimus Prime were a flatbed. Big Trailer Robo (Staks) ended up being the unusual one. Big Apache Robo (Warpath) and Big Shuttle Robo (Spay-C) were based on 600 series vehicles but completely redesigned. The first two Big Machine Robo toys were pretty much just Bike Robo (Cy-Kill) and Eagle Robo (Leader-1) from the 600 series blown up to a larger size. The rest of the Super GoBots (ignoring the mostly crappy western exclusives) hail from a different series known as Big Machine Robo. You're probably more familiar with them as Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus of the Transformers, or the subject of this review, Staks Transport, GoBot extraordinaire. So it's really no shock that Takara released Battle Convoy and Powered Convoy in their Diaclone line, or that Bandai released Big Trailer Robo in their Machine Robo. And remember, in the '70s and early '80s, pop culture had a serious love of truckers thanks to Smokey and the Bandit and the like. As you can imagine, this inspired many ridiculous tales of the open road. Then he would hitchhike home and pocket the plane fare. As a young man in the late '60s and early '70s before getting married, my dad used to drive semi trucks from Michigan to California for my great uncle's trucking company. My dad used to take me to Selfridge Air Base to see air shows, so that explains the airplanes, but that's not what we're talking about here. When I was a little kid around 3 or 4, I loved three things: trucks, jets, and robots. PosteRazor lets you choose an absolute size, where you designate the final width and height a size in terms of the number of pieces of paper required to print the poster or a size as a percentage of the original image. In the next step, Step 4, you choose how large you want your poster to be. A preview shows you, in red, the area of each page that will overlap with adjoining pages. In Step 3, you choose how much of each page’s portion of the image should overlap with those of the adjoining pages-in order to make aligning the pages into a single, larger image easier-and on which edges that overlap should occur. Not that most people in PosteRazor’s target market will have a printer that can print on 16-foot paper.) You can also designate non-printable borders if your printer can’t print all the way to the edge. Choices include A3, A4, legal, letter, and tabloid, or you can enter custom dimensions. Step 2 is where you choose the size of the paper onto which you’ll be printing.
